How to Prepare a Cairns Property for Drone Photography

A practical checklist for presenting the driveway, garden, pool, roof and outdoor areas before an aerial property shoot.

Professional Cairns property drone photography can show potential buyers far more than ordinary ground-level images. From the air, they can see the complete layout of the home, the shape of the block, gardens, swimming pool, driveway, outdoor living areas and the property’s position within the surrounding neighbourhood.

That wider perspective can be a powerful part of a real estate campaign. It can also reveal vehicles, wheelie bins, pool-cleaning equipment and other distractions that are easy to overlook from ground level.

Preparing the property does not require a complete makeover. A few practical improvements can help it look cleaner, more spacious and more appealing in the final aerial photographs.

Professional aerial photography can show the complete layout and outdoor features of a Cairns property

Cairns property drone photography starts with the main selling features

Before preparing the property, decide which features prospective buyers should notice first. Depending on the home, these may include:

• the relationship between the house, swimming pool and backyard

• the size and shape of the block

• tropical gardens and established trees

• outdoor entertaining areas

• side access for a boat, caravan or trailer

• mountain, city or water views

• sheds, studios or additional accommodation

• proximity to beaches, parks and local amenities

Send these priorities to us before the appointment. Knowing what matters most helps us plan suitable aerial angles and make the best use of the available light. For acreage, commercial property or a development site, it may also help to provide a site plan or explain the approximate boundaries, access roads and important structures.

1. Move vehicles away from the property

Cars, trailers and boats are often among the most noticeable distractions in aerial property photographs. Where possible, move the following away before the shoot:

• cars and work vehicles

• motorcycles

• boats and jet skis

• caravans and trailers

• construction machinery

• visitors’ vehicles

Parking everything immediately outside the front boundary may not be enough because a drone can capture a much wider area than a camera positioned at street level. A clear driveway makes the property appear more spacious and keeps attention on the home rather than the vehicles. Where street parking is unavoidable, try to move vehicles away from the main frontage or let us know before the shoot.

Clearing vehicles and temporary clutter helps the property look more spacious from the air.

2. Remove outdoor clutter

Objects that appear minor from ground level can become surprisingly prominent from the air. Walk around the entire property and remove or neatly store:

• wheelie bins, garden hoses and lawn equipment

• ladders, buckets, tools and building materials

• children’s toys and sports equipment

• pet bowls, bedding and toys

• laundry and cleaning products

• temporary signs and unused or damaged furniture

Check the sides of the house as well as the main garden. Narrow access paths, storage areas and utility spaces may be hidden from the street but clearly visible from above. Bins should ideally be placed inside a garage, shed or covered area rather than simply moved beside the house.

During property shoots around Cairns, some of the most common distractions are bins beside the house, pool-cleaning hoses and vehicles parked just outside the driveway. These are simple things to fix, but they can make a noticeable difference to the final images.

3. Tidy the garden without removing its character

Tropical gardens can look exceptional in Cairns property photography. Palms, established trees and colourful vegetation can create a strong sense of lifestyle and privacy. However, fallen palm fronds, loose garden waste and uneven lawn edges may appear more prominent from the air than they do at ground level.

• mow the lawn and trim untidy edges

• remove visible weeds, fallen branches and palm fronds

• clear dead leaves from prominent garden beds

• sweep paths, patios and driveways

• straighten outdoor furniture and remove damaged pots

• store garden tools and trim vegetation covering important parts of the house

There is no need to heavily cut back healthy landscaping. The aim is to make the garden look maintained while preserving the tropical character of the property. For acreage, concentrate first on the areas closest to the house, driveway, pool, sheds and other important structures.

4. Prepare the swimming pool

A clean swimming pool can become the visual centrepiece of an aerial property photograph. Clean it in advance and allow enough time for disturbed sediment to settle. On the day of the shoot, remove:

• automatic pool cleaners and cleaning hoses

• pool covers, floating toys and inflatable items

• chemical containers, towels and maintenance equipment

• unused or damaged outdoor furniture

Arrange sun lounges evenly and straighten umbrellas, tables and chairs. If the property has a spa, water feature or pool lighting, tell us whether it can be operated safely. These features may be useful during a video shoot or late-afternoon session. Avoid watering the surrounding lawn or paved areas immediately before the appointment because wet patches can appear uneven in photographs.

Not sure what the drone will reveal?

Some owners and agents are surprised by how much of the block can be seen from the air. Send us the property address and a few recent exterior photographs before the appointment. We can advise which areas are likely to appear and what should receive the most attention.

5. Present outdoor living areas

Outdoor living is an important selling feature for many Cairns homes. Patios, decks, balconies and covered entertaining areas should look clean, balanced and ready to use.

• centre outdoor dining tables and arrange chairs evenly

• straighten cushions and open a clean patio umbrella

• remove faded or damaged outdoor items

• clean barbecue areas and sweep decks, patios and tiles

• close storage cupboards and remove pet items, ashtrays and cleaning products

• store loose cushions when conditions are windy

Avoid filling the area with excessive decorations. From the air, a simple and organised arrangement usually looks more attractive than numerous small accessories.

6. Check the roof and gutters safely

The roof becomes a major part of the property when photographed from above. Look for temporary distractions such as:

• fallen palm fronds and branches

• leaves collected in gutters

• loose tarpaulins

• building materials or visible rubbish

• unsecured temporary equipment

Do not climb onto the roof unless you are trained, properly equipped and able to do so safely. Any work involving heights should be completed by a qualified professional. Preparing the roof is not about concealing genuine defects; it is about removing temporary debris that may make an otherwise well-maintained property appear untidy.

7. Clean important glass surfaces

Drone photography is not limited to high overhead images. Lower aerial angles may capture windows, sliding doors, pool fencing and glass balconies. Clean prominent street-facing windows, sliding glass doors, pool fencing, balcony glass, patio doors and skylights.

This can be particularly important near the coast, where salt residue, dust and watermarks may become visible when sunlight reflects from the glass. When aerial and ground-level real estate photography are completed on the same day, preparing these surfaces benefits both parts of the shoot.

8. Keep people, contractors and pets clear

For most property shoots, the simplest arrangement is for occupants, visitors, contractors and pets to remain indoors while the drone is operating. This helps the flight proceed efficiently and reduces the chance of people appearing unintentionally in the final images.

• keep pets securely indoors

• ask children and visitors to remain inside

• pause gardening and maintenance work

• avoid scheduling deliveries during the session

• inform the agent or property manager that drone photography is taking place

CASA’s standard rules generally require separation from people who are not essential to the operation, and drones must not be flown directly over a person. Read CASA’s guidance on flying near people.

Every property and flight location is assessed individually. The suitable operating area depends on the property layout, surrounding activity, obstacles, weather, permissions and applicable aviation requirements.

9. Provide clear access and property information

The pilot may need access to the front yard, backyard or another suitable operating position. Before the shoot:

• unlock required gates and provide clear access instructions

• secure dogs and other animals

• explain how electric gates operate

• identify overhead cables and other hazards

• make sure the owner or agent is contactable

• explain shared access arrangements and point out areas that must not be entered

The best operating position may not be the driveway. Trees, buildings, powerlines and surrounding activity may require another location. For acreage, development sites and unusually shaped properties, provide a site plan or marked aerial screenshot showing approximate boundaries, access roads, detached structures and other important features.

Drone photographs are not cadastral surveys. Any boundary lines added to marketing images should be based on information supplied or confirmed by the appropriate property professional.

10. Identify important surrounding features

One of the main advantages of aerial property photography is showing where a home sits within its surroundings. Tell us when it is important to include:

• beaches, parks and walking tracks

• schools and shopping areas

• marinas and sporting facilities

• mountain, city or water views

• rural landscapes and main access roads

We can then consider suitable angles and compositions while avoiding unnecessary focus on neighbouring private areas. The images should accurately support the property’s genuine location and features without creating a misleading impression.

11. Allow flexibility for Cairns weather

Weather around Cairns can change quickly. Rain, strong wind, low cloud and poor visibility can affect whether the operation can proceed and whether the final images will look their best.

• keep a backup date available where possible

• avoid scheduling immediately before the listing must launch

• clear storm debris after heavy weather

• dry outdoor furniture and avoid watering immediately before the shoot

• tell us if the property is exposed to strong coastal or mountain winds

A shoot may occasionally need to be postponed even when it is not raining. Wind, visibility, local airspace activity and conditions around the property must all be suitable. We assess each location individually and will not proceed when the conditions are unsafe or unlikely to produce professional results.

12. Consider the best time of day

The direction of the sunlight can significantly affect the appearance of the property. An east-facing home may photograph well in the morning, while a west-facing façade may benefit from afternoon light. Pools, mountain views, gardens and nearby water can also influence the ideal time.

• tell us whether the front or backyard is more important

• identify which side receives the best light

• let us know when important areas become heavily shaded

• confirm whether you prefer bright daytime photographs or late-afternoon footage

For some properties, combining daylight aerial photographs with a short late-afternoon video creates a stronger and more varied marketing package.

Frequently asked questions

Does the property need to be perfectly styled?

No. Focus on removing temporary clutter, cleaning the pool, clearing the driveway and presenting the main outdoor features. A property does not need expensive styling to photograph well from the air.

Should I remove every vehicle from the street?

This is not always possible, particularly in busy residential areas. Start by clearing the driveway and immediate frontage. Tell us in advance if parking or access may be difficult.

Can drone photography proceed in light rain?

The decision depends on the complete weather situation, not rainfall alone. Wind, visibility, airspace activity and conditions around the property must also be suitable. We will recommend rescheduling when necessary.

How long does a property drone shoot take?

The time required depends on the property size, requested photographs or video clips, access, weather and the complexity of the location. We confirm the planned coverage before the appointment.

Can property boundaries be added to the images?

Boundary and point-of-interest overlays may be available as an additional service. The relevant information must be supplied or confirmed by the client or an appropriate property professional. A drone photograph is not a cadastral survey.

What information should I provide when requesting a quote?

Send the complete address, preferred date, intended use of the images and the main features you would like captured. Details about access, deadlines and required photo or video formats are also helpful.

What you do not need to do

Your property does not need to look completely perfect. Concentrate on removing temporary clutter, presenting the strongest outdoor features and providing clear access. We will manage the flight planning, camera settings, composition and aerial angles.

A clear driveway, tidy garden and well-presented swimming pool will usually make a greater difference than excessive decorations or expensive outdoor styling.
